Community Landmarks
The world-renowned championship Capilano Golf Course, famed for its spectacular views, is also a lasting legacy of the original investments of the Company. No longer owned by British Properties, it did, however, set standards for quality that helped define the new West Vancouver community.
British Properties' response to the inconvenience of residents having to cross the Lions Gate Bridge to shop provided for another Canadian first. In 1950, the Company opened Park Royal Shopping Centre, the first such regional centre in Canada. The concept of a composite shopping center with off-street parking was new in North America and provided not only a unique shopping experience for North Shore residents, but also drew shoppers from throughout the Lower Mainland. While the Company sold Park Royal in 1989, it was exciting to watch it grow from 130,000 sq.ft. to almost one million sq.ft. today.
But most of all, the legacy of British Properties can be found in the network of tree-lined streets, public parks, greenways, bridges, school sites, tennis courts, viewpoints, and walking trails made available as part of the evolution of each of its new communities. British Properties' commitment to West Vancouver is both historic and enduring.
