Making Sustainability a Priority

From the Company’s earliest days in the 1930s, when it employed the Olmstead Brothers, Landscape Architects known for their design of New York’s Central Park, British Pacific Properties has always strived to make the natural surroundings a key feature of its neighbourhoods.

Over time, the Company has become increasingly sophisticated in integrating our developments within the topography, watercourses, the flora and fauna of its unique location. Whitby Estates, for example, enjoys access to a wealth of hiking trails that thread their way through the nearby rainforest.

With the coming of the 21st Century, the Company’s next phase of development has been guided by the principles of sustainability and the “Design With Nature” philosophy of 1960s architect Ian McHarg. McHarg introduced the process known as ‘the sieve analysis’ which examines the various topographical and geotechnical conditions of the land to reveal areas where development would best ‘fit with the land’ and where it would be inappropriate. Complimenting this framework are contemporary sustainability principles which call for a diversity of people and housing, pedestrian and cycling friendly connections, green building and infrastructure and community facilities and programs, with more complete amenities.
